Scientific Theatre

What is it?

From 2006 to 2009, every year Xunta de Galicia trialled an innovative activity in the field of science and technology communication. In 2007 a play was set up, targeted at families with children (8-10 years old), based on nanoscience.  The play was performed at weekends to allow parents to attend, rather than delivering the play to schools and only reaching children.  Indeed one of the aims of the activity was to promote science dissemination as an option for family leisure.

Does it work?

We found the initiative extremely effective.  We got a lot of positive feedback from artists and researchers.  Researchers felt it help them learn how to explain complex concepts to the public.  The theatre company offered to deliver additional performances of the play.

Advice if you’re thinking of trying it:

  • Organise a previous workshop in which actors and researchers exchange ideas and acquire knowledge about the specific scientific area the play will deal with.
  • Advertise the activity in schools in collaboration with teachers.
  • Collaborate with city councils where the play will be performed to include the play into their cultural program/planning.
